You’ve just purchased a piece of canvas artwork that you absolutely love, which felt like a no brainer. But now the hard work comes— how to install the art in your home.
To frame or not to frame? Does it need one, does it not? The answer might actually be easier than you think, but essentially.. it’s going to boil down to preference.
For canvas paintings, I used to not be a huge advocate of framing. It’s not that I DIDN’T like artwork framed; it just didn’t feel like a huge deal, and if I could save a few bucks by just hanging the canvas by it’s lonesome, then why wouldn’t I?
This can still be true, and is true, honestly. Of course a canvas can be hung without a frame! Especially if the canvas has a gallery profile (more depth on the sides), as those tend to look more refined. Even more so if the sides are painted, and the artwork wraps around the sides. Chef’s kiss!
However.. there is much to be admired about a canvas painting that IS framed.
This past year, I really jumped onboard the frame train. To my surprise, a basic oak floating frame wasn’t very costly. You also have to view your artwork as an investment. This piece is going to take up residence in your space and live with you. You will walk past it and see it every day. Whether it’s framed or not, you want it to beautify and elevate your space!
I finally gave in, and decided to purchase a very simple, very inexpensive frame (I got this one off of Amazon. I know, right?!) I LOVED the way it gave my artwork an extra little oomph!! How beautiful does this floral look nestled inside that pretty oak woodgrain? I’m now more apt to spend a little more on a beautiful frame now that I know how great it looks.

Of course, price will vary when it comes to frames, as it so often does. But if you need a recommendation, here’s one to get you started that won’t break the bank! MCS Canvas Floating Frame (PS, I’m not affiliated with this company in any way, and I get no kick-backs for suggesting this product to you. I have just purchased one myself, and like it for my own home!)
With all of that being said—
Let’s Recap:
-You don’t necessarily need to frame your canvas piece. Especially if it’s gallery wrapped, or the painting wraps around the sides! It can hang beautifully all on its own.
-You can purchase a frame inexpensively if you’re framing on a budget, and it can really take your purchased artwork to the next level!
Alright, y’all! That’s all I’ve got for today. Please comment and let me know how you prefer your artwork— framed or not? Be sure to share with a friend! <3
